An elegant and electrified coupé with superb agility and driving dynamics, a high-traction all-wheel-drive vehicle offering exceptional everyday comfort: the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 (S) 4MATIC+ Coupé combines numerous vehicle personalities in one model. At the heart of the Performance SUV Coupé is the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, which has been electrified here with an EQ Boost starter-alternator and a 48-volt on-board electrical system to deliver a particularly immediate response at start-up. The base model delivers an output of 420 kW (571 PS), the S variant an impressive 450 kW (612 PS). Impressive agility is guaranteed by the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air-sprung suspension with AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilisation on a 48-volt basis, the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G 9-speed automatic transmission. The new GLE Coupé.
The new GLE Coupé from Mercedes-Benz blends the sportiness and elegance of a coupé with the engineering of the new large premium-SUV model series from Mercedes-Benz. At the launch, powerful six-cylinder diesel engines in the form of the 350 d and 400 d are initially available. Together with the new 4MATIC with torque on demand and the wheelbase 60 mm shorter than on the GLE SUV they ensure a pleasurably dynamic driving experience. Preparations are under way for a plug-in-hybrid version with a practical, locally emission-free range as for the GLE SUV.

Overview
When the tuning experts at AMG are turned loose on a Mercedes-Benz, the result is an enthusiast’s dream, even when they’re tasked with transforming the relatively mundane GLA250 subcompact SUV. The Mercedes-AMG GLA-class is a dual-threat, starting with the 302-hp GLA35 and ratcheting up to the fire-breathing 382-hp GLA45. Along with standard all-wheel drive, both have impressive acceleration, and Mercedes claims a 4.3-second rip from zero to 60 for the GLA45. Handling is poised, but some people might find the ride is too stiff. However, that’s AMG’s cover charge for this particular type of agility, so sensitive folks will likely prefer the Benz-branded GLA-class. Still, the GLA doesn’t lose much else in the transformation from Benz to AMG, and the GLA35 and GLA45 both offer all the high-tech features and interior luxuries as the GLA250. They AMG twins are just better at raising heart rates.

Relatively small niche: the SUV coupé.
The new GLE Coupé is a further example of the Mercedes-Benz strategy to address all the requirements of customers in the premium-SUV segment in a targeted manner. From a relatively small niche, the segment of SUCs, namely SUV coupés, has developed into a trend within a trend in no time. With the renewal of the premium-SUV family Mercedes-Benz is also putting the GLE Coupé on a new technical footing.
“The GLE Coupé blends the imposing power of an off-road vehicle with the emotively appealing sportiness and elegance of a coupé,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG. “The sensuous, reduced design idiom in combination with the extreme proportions creates a unique design statement.”

Expressive, powerful and elegant: the exterior design.
The design idiom of the exterior is the embodiment of hallmark AMG Driving Performance. Membership of the Affalterbach model family is obvious at first glance thanks to the AMG-specific radiator grille in high-gloss chrome. The stylish and striking coupé silhouette makes for a self-assured appearance, with design lines that clearly convey the passion for performance. As a typical feature of the Performance models, the front apron in a dynamic jet-wing design is painted in the vehicle colour and has black air intakes. Imposing powerdomes in the bonnet and the front splitter in silver chrome emphasise the sharper coupé design all round.

Like the GLE and the GLS, as a member of the large premium-SUV family the GLE Coupé is being built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In total Mercedes-Benz now offers eight SUV models in the form of the GLA, GLC, GLC Coupé, the G-Class and the new GLB. With currently around one third of sales, the SUVs are a major structural pillar in the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio, and greatly contribute to the growth of the brand. To date, more than six million customers around the world have opted for a Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
Both the GLA35 and GLA45 have a host of standard performance features, including all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension, that increase the driving excitement versus the regular Mercedes-Benz GLA250. From an enthusiast’s perspective, that 382-hp turbo-four fitted to the GLA45 makes it most compelling choice, and it’s the one we’d choose.
AMG-specific details.
The newly designed rear apron with AMG-specific details such as a striking diffuser in black and a trim strip in silver chrome visually accentuate the vehicle’s width. The special AMG exhaust system with two rectangular high-gloss chrome-plated twin tailpipe trim elements completes the sportily dominant look – the tailpipe trim elements on the S variant are visually differentiated by a characteristic fluted effect.
Further individualisation options are available in the AMG Night Package. This includes heat-insulating, dark-tinted windows and also the front splitter, front and rear apron trim, inserts in the side skirts, mirror caps and window frames in dignified black. In addition, the twin tailpipe trim elements are finished in elegant high-gloss black.
Exterior design: powerful presence.
The front view combines characteristics of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family with clear coupé attributes: the diamond radiator grille with the single horizontal louvre references the other coupés in the Mercedes-Benz range. The openings in the louvre, meanwhile, showcase the SUV character, as does the high-gloss chrome-plated underguard in the front apron. With the AMG Line the grille widens downwards in an A shape, and the pins in the diamond radiator grille are portrayed in chrome.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The AMG-massaged turbocharged four-cylinder makes 302-hp in the GLA35, and Mercedes claims that’s enough to rocket the SUV to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds. The higher-powered GLA45 can do the same deed in a claimed 4.3 seconds. In our testing, the outgoing GLA45—which made 375-hp—hit 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, so we think Mercedes is being conservative on its acceleration claims for the enhanced models. AMG engineers have imbued these versions with the same amount of athleticism as the previous generation of GLA-class with a touch more ride comfort. The outgoing model offered very little suspension compliance, which resulted in a punishing ride.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The GLA35 is estimated to deliver 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, and the more powerful GLA45 is predictably thirstier, with ratings of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. These efficiency numbers are similar to rivals such as the BMW X2 M35i and the Mini Cooper Countryman JCW. We haven’t had a chance to test the new GLA35 of GLA45 models on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route. For what it’s worth, the X2 M35i managed an impressive 33 mpg in the same test, and the last-generation GLA45 turned in a 28-mpg result. Progressive, elegant and aesthetic: the interior design.
The typical look and feel of the brand is continued in the high-quality interior of the GLE 63 Coupé, which is characterised by a resolutely sporty ambience with a dynamic and exclusive flair. The AMG seats are upholstered in nappa leather, provide optimum lateral support and have an AMG-specific seat pattern layout with an “AMG” badge in the front backrests. Other leather variants are optionally available. The S variant is further identified by its grey seat belts and contrasting topstitching in the seats in silver grey. Individually adjustable ambient lighting comes as standard.
The centre console includes an AMG-specific control unit with additional switches that are used to regulate the 3-stage ESP ® (Electronic Stability Control), the manual transmission mode, the Adaptive Damping System, the optional AMG Performance exhaust system and the vehicle level. Alongside the AMG brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs, door sill panels and black floor mats with “AMG” lettering accentuate the sporty look. A wide range of high-quality interior trim elements is available for further individualisation of the interior. AMG trim elements in carbon fibre lend a particularly sporty touch to the interior.
Interior design: coupé without constraints.
The interior of the new GLE Coupé shares numerous common features with the other models in the new premium-SUV family with a clear emphasis on the sporty aspect. The modern cockpit with two large screens in the format 12.3 inches /31.2 cm and the strikingly shaped instrument panel, horizontally divided by a trim element tier, and seamlessly flowing into the door trim, appear familiar. The upper surface is covered in ARTICO man-made leather upholstery as standard in the GLE Coupé. The sporty emphasis comes courtesy of the standard sports seats, offering particularly good lateral support, with an ARTICO cover and the new sports steering wheel with a nappa leather rim, which is also standard in the coupé.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The GLA-class’s interior is roomier for rear-seat riders than the last generation model, and that applies to the GLA35 as well. Interior material quality has taken a step up and the interior design closely resembles the other new Mercedes SUVs that have recently launched. Sporty-looking front seats, red stitching, red seatbelts, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and carbon-fiber interior trim all give the AMG version of the GLA-class a racier ambiance. Cargo space is slightly larger than the outgoing model and the load floor is now flush with the sill for easier loading and unloading.
Continuation of electrification.
The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine in the new GLE 63 Coupé is fitted in both output variants (420 kW/571 PS and 450 kW/612 PS) with an integrated EQ Boost starter-alternator. It combines a starter motor and an alternator in a single, powerful electric motor compactly integrated between the engine and the transmission. The additional 16 kW (22 PS) of output plus 250 Nm of torque which can be called upon temporarily not only enable more spontaneous moving-off characteristics. This is because moreover, this innovative component supplies the 48-volt on-board electrical system, is used as a power generator and also performs hybrid functions. These include boost, recuperate, load point shift and the virtually imperceptible restarting of the engine with the start/stop function.
Spacious: custom work on the sports outfit.
The line of the four-door coupé body has been deliberately more tightly tailored than on the GLE and offers tangibly more room than the predecessor, giving up to five occupants a comfortable amount of space. This is because the wheelbase is 60 mm shorter than on the GLE SUV, but 20 mm longer than in the previous coupé, and this extra benefits the occupants’ seating and legroom. The entrance dimension has even been enlarged by 35 mm. In many places the new member of the family offers improvements to the interior dimensions, which add up to a significantly better sense of spaciousness. The capacity of the stowage spaces in the interior has been increased to a total of 40 litres. The sports suit features figure-hugging tailoring – but is a comfortable fit. The all-round view has also been improved and the optional sliding roof panel is larger too.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Two giant 10.3-inch infotainment displays dominate the GLA-class’s dashboard. One serves as a reconfigurable gauge display, and the other handles the infotainment system. The interface features Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX software, which offers the “Hey Mercedes” voice control system, but it also can be controlled via the touchscreen or the touchpad mounted on the center console. The system includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, but navigation costs extra.
AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilisation.
The AMG-specific configuration for high vehicle dynamics is greatly assisted by the active roll stabilisation system ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL on a 48-volt basis. This precisely compensates body movements. The result is that even in sporty situations near the limits, the handling remains precisely controllable and extremely direct. The system uses two independently operating, electromechanical actuators at the front and rear axles, each with an integrated planetary gear. This means that the stabilisation system not only reduces body roll when cornering, but also allows more precise tuning of the cornering and load cycle properties. In addition, it increases ride comfort when driving in a straight line because stimuli by one-sided road bumps are balanced out, for example. Body movements can be actively and optimally adapted to the driving status, which intensifies the driving experience.
Best in this segment.
The boot is already generous in its standard state with 655 litres and in this position it conceals its load beneath a high-quality, folding and removable cover attached with magnets. The backrest of the rear seats which folds in a ratio of 40:20:40 increases the boot to up to 1,790 litres – 70 litres more than in the predecessor and a best in this segment. It enlarges the level load space to over two metres in length and up to a minimum width of 1,080 mm if required – both improvements of 87 and 72 mm respectively compared with on the predecessor. The loading sill is inherently higher than on conventional SUVs – but here too the new GLE Coupé is around 60 mm better than the previous model, and when equipped with AIRMATIC the tail end can even be lowered a further 50 mm at the press of a button.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
A suite of advanced driver-assistance features are offered as part of the Driver Assistance package, but automated emergency braking is standard. Driving pleasure to the power of seven.
The seven DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+”, “Individual”, “RACE” (exclusive to the S variant of the GLE 63 Coupé), “Trail” and “Sand” allow a very varied driving experience with a wide spread between maximum comfort and agile sportiness. The modes modify key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering.
The drive programmes are linked to the AMG DYNAMICS agility control, which means that the handling characteristics can be even more closely matched with different requirements and driving conditions. Behind the umbrella term “AMG DYNAMICS” are the agility functions “Basic”, “Advanced”, “Pro” and “Master”, whose functions are automatically selected by the respective drive programme. The further “Traction” and “Slide” levels come into effect in the Off-Road “Trail” and “Sand” drive programmes when the ESP ® is deactivated.
Parameters relevant to driving, such as the response of the engine and suspension or the control thresholds of the completely redeveloped ESP ® , are intelligently adapted according to the drive programme. The spectrum ranges from extremely safety-oriented to highly dynamic. The “Master” mode stored in the RACE drive programme ensures optimum agility and brings out the high driving dynamics potential to optimum effect – for example through higher yaw rates and a faster response from the accelerator pedal, gearshift system, electronically controlled rear axle locking differential or brake force distribution of the all-wheel drive system.
Powerful six-cylinder diesel for Europe.
The driver-focussed, sporty standards of the new GLE Coupé are likewise clearly apparent in its engine line-up. The base engines at market launch are high-torque six-cylinder in-line turbodiesel engines.
The two diesel-engined GLE Coupé models are powered by the OM 656, the six-cylinder in-line engine from the current engine family. It is available in two output levels, as the GLE Coupé 350 d 4MATIC rated at 200 kW (272 PS) and 600 Nm and as the GLE Coupé 400 d 4MATIC rated at 243 kW (330 PS) and 700 Nm torque. In both versions, the powerful engine already complies with the Euro 6d standard (RDE/Real Driving Emissions Step 2), even in demanding driving situations.

Basic warranty coverage of four years or 50,000 miles is included with the purchase of a new GLA-class, but both the BMW and the Mini offer three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Power on tap, i.e. torque on demand, is also the power transmission motto. Because all variants of the new GLE Coupé have a transfer case with an electronically controlled multiplate clutch as standard behind the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This allows a variable transfer of drive torque from 0–100 percent (torque on demand) between the axles. During cornering it can influence the yaw torque in a targeted manner towards over- and understeering of the vehicle and together with the shorter wheelbase it increases the agility of the new GLE Coupé.
